Time-frequency classification using a multiple hypotheses test: an application to the classification of humpback whale signals

چکیده
We present a non-stationary signal classi cation algorithm based on a time-frequency representation and a multiple hypothesis test. The time-frequency representation is used to construct a time-dependent quadratic discriminant function. At selected points in time we evaluate the discriminant function and form a set of statistics which are used to test the multiple hypotheses. The multiple hypotheses are treated simultaneously using the sequentially rejective Bonferroni test to control the probability of incorrect classi cation of one class. We show results for classifying three classes of humpback whale calls. The results demonstrate that this time-frequency method performs favourably when compared with a frequency domain method which assumes stationarity.

Automatic Classification of Humpback Whale Social Calls
Acoustic methods are becoming increasingly common in the study of marine mammal populations and behavior. Automating the detection and classification of whale vocalizations has been a central aim of these methods. The focus has primarily been on intra-species detection and classification, however, humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) social call detection and classification has largely remai...
متن کاملAutomated extraction and classification of time-frequency contours in humpback vocalizations.
A time-frequency contour extraction and classification algorithm was created to analyze humpback whale vocalizations. The algorithm automatically extracted contours of whale vocalization units by searching for gray-level discontinuities in the spectrogram images. The unit-to-unit similarity was quantified by cross-correlating the contour lines. A library of distinctive humpback units was then g...

1 Humpback whales also make a variety of social sounds that are heard most often when the whales are interacting in groups [Thompson et. al 1977]. These sounds appear to be subject to different rules from those influencing songs. Moreover, both genders make social sounds whereas almost all observed singing humpbacks have been male [Payne & Payne 1985]. The role that song plays in the lives of h...

Introduction: Emotions play an important role in health, communication, and interaction between humans. The ability to recognize the emotional status of people is an important indicator of health and natural relationships. In DEAP database, electroencephalogram (EEG) signals as well as environmental physiological signals related to 32 volunteers are registered. The participants in each video we...
